Climate Change Awareness Program and Consultation cum Interaction Program in Baglung, Okhaldhung  and Solukhumbu District

 

Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)-Nepal Climate Change Knowledge Management Center(NCCKMC) organized Climate Change Awareness Program and Consultation cum Interaction Program on Climate Change Knowledge Management at Local Level in Baglung, Okhaldhung and Solukhumbu district with an objective to share climate change knowledge and sensitize the importance of climate change knowledge management at local level. According to Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment of Government of Nepal Baglung district is moderately vulnerable district whereas Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu district are highly vulnerable to climate change.

The Climate Change Awareness Program targets school students, teachers and community people. The program was successfully conducted at Vidhymandi Secondary School in Baglung, Shree Sagarmatha Secondary School in Okhaldhunng and Shree Jana Jagriti Secondary in Solukhumbu district respectively on 24 May, 31 May an d 04 June 2018. Prof Dr Jiba Raj Pokharel, Vice Chancellor, NAST formally inagurated the program in Baglung and Okhaldhung district. District Eduction Resource Person inagurated the program in Solukhumbu district. Altogether 30 schools with participation of more than 1500 participants observed the program.

In the afternoon, a dozen of colorful posters containing information on the science and impacts of climate change in Nepali language were displayed at the premises of the schools. A Climate Change Quiz was organized in the schools that were observed by the important gathering including newly elected local representatives including mayor and deputy mayor, Chairperson of School Management Committee, Teachers, Police & Army officers and the journalist. Each school was represented by three students with at least one being girl student.  In the interaction program, Mr Agni Dhakal, Chief Assistant Scientific Officer, NAST explained the science and impacts of climate change along with some adaptation measures. Mr Dhakal answered the questions raised by students and the teachers. Finally, prizes were distributed to the winning teams and participants.

A local television named Dhaulagiri Television live broadcasted the program in Baglung district. In Solukhumbu district, local FM station Solu FM had live broadcasted the program, which covers the nearby districts

The next day to the School Awareness Program, NCCKMC respectively on 25 May, 01 June and 05 June 2018 also organized District Level Consultation cum Interaction program on Climate Change Knowledge Management in Baglung, Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu district. Mr Bed Prasad Kharel, Chief District Officer chaired the program in Baglung District while in Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu district, Ms Ikshya Kumari Gurung, Deputy Mayor of Siddhicharan Municipality and Ms Saraswoti Adhikari, Ass. Chief District Officer respectively chaired the program. In the program, Dr Bimala Devkota, Senior Scientific Officer, NAST shared her knowledge on importance of climate change knowledge management and how such knowledge is being managed in Nepal. Mr  Pawan Kumar Neupane, Scientific Officer, NAST presented an updated information and knowledge on climate change impacts and its scenario. Resource person invited from District Coordination Committee delivered presentation on an illustrative overview of climate change impacts and adaptation measures practiced in the districts. The program was observed by locally elected representatives, district officers, police and army officers, lecturers, teachers, journalists, and development workers. The participants of the programs opined their experiences on climate change impacts, adaptation practices and learned the importance of climate change knowledge management at local level.
